Spruce Group Campground sits on the shore of Lake Isabel at about 8,600 feet where the rocky slopes of the Wet Mountains meet a small recreational reservoir built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The site is one singular group campsite (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1) designed to host groups rather than individual parties it can accommodate up to 50 day-use visitors and 40 overnight guests. Dense spruce forest surrounds the site and the St. Charles Creek runs along the edge of the campground, giving easy shore access and additional fishing opportunities. Practical facilities include a covered picnic shelter that seats 25 30 people, a horseshoe pit and volleyball court, two 3-foot wide grills, and individual campfire rings. Drinking water is available from a hand pump and there is an accessible double-vault toilet; note there are no defined tent pads. The access road through the group site is paved and a small paved parking area will fit a limited number of RVs, so some groups with RVs can park onsite but space is restricted. Lake Isabel Recreation Area centers the outdoor opportunities here: the lake permits non-motorized boating and is regularly stocked with brown and brook trout, while brook trout also inhabit the St. Charles headwaters. Trails radiate from the area the Snow Slide Trail is popular for foot and bike traffic, and the 15-mile Cisneros Trail (also open to ATVs) leads into the Wet Mountains and links to the St. Charles Trail to reach St. Charles Peak. A nearby lodge rents paddles and rowboats and provides groceries and a restaurant; the Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway is close by for scenic drives, and golf courses lie about 15 minutes away. Reservations and cancellations for the group facility follow Recreation.gov rules: cancellations made less than 14 days before arrival incur a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee; no-shows are charged a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate, taxes and applicable add-ons. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days of the reservation end date (card refunds return to the original card; cash/check refunds are issued by Treasury check and can take 6 8 weeks). Finally, if you plan to fly an unmanned aircraft, be aware UAS/drones are regulated on Forest Service lands and must follow applicable laws and agency policies. To reach the site from Pueblo, head south on I-25 and take exit 74, then drive west on Highway 165 into the Lake Isabel Recreation Area and follow Forest Road 374; the Spruce group campground sits beyond the St. Charles Campground entrance behind a gate.
