“We love this site. But there is no drinking water, and though there are restrooms, they leave a lot to be desired.”

Ponderosa Group Campground sits on the south side of Lake Isabel, a 40-acre recreational lake built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, at about 8,600 feet where shady pines and aspen scatter across a shoreline that meets the rocky bases of the Wet Mountains. The campground consists of a single group site that can accommodate up to 60 overnight guests and is configured to accept both RVs and tents (note: no specific utility hookups are listed). The group area is set up for shared activities: a covered picnic shelter that seats 25 30 people, a group-sized charcoal grill, eight individual campfire rings, a horseshoe pit and a volleyball court. Basic services include vault toilets, a hand-pump for drinking water and dumpsters; staffing is limited so call (719) 269-8500 for general information. At the lake itself, visitors commonly kayak, canoe and fish Lake Isabel is regularly stocked with brown and brook trout and nearby St. Charles Creek also supports brook trout fishing. A nearby lodge rents paddles and rowboats, sells groceries and operates a restaurant. Beyond the immediate campground, the Lake Isabel Recreation Area provides access to a wider network of trails and routes that showcase the Pike and San Isabel National Forests and the Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands. Hikers, bicyclists and motorcyclists can use the Snow Slide Trail and the 15-mile Cisneros Trail (the latter is also open to ATVs and connects to St. Charles Trail toward St. Charles Peak), while the surrounding region supports climbing, horseback riding, OHV use, wildlife viewing and links to long-distance routes such as the Continental Divide and Colorado Trails. Practical policies to note: group facility reservations cancelled fewer than 14 days before arrival incur a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee; no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate, taxes and add-ons. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your reservation ends; refunds to cards are credited to the original payment method, while cash or check refunds are issued by Treasury check and may take 6 8 weeks. Drones are regulated on these public lands follow Forest Service UAS rules and local restrictions before flying. To reach the area, head west from the Pueblo corridor along Highway 165 to the Lake Isabel Recreation Area south entrance.
