La Vista Campground sits in a meadow at about 8,600 feet on the west side of 40-acre Lake Isabel, where scattered pines and aspens shade sites and St. Charles Creek runs nearby. The lake, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and developed specifically for recreation, is part of the Lake Isabel Recreation Area on the Frontier Pathways Historic Byway in the Wet Mountains and is also on one of Colorado's Birding Trails. The campground is a good base for water-based activities non-motorized boating is allowed and the lake is stocked with brown and brook trout, while the St. Charles headwaters support brook trout fishing as well. Hikers and riders can access the Snow Slide Trail and the 15-mile Cisneros Trail (open to ATV riders) that lead into high meadow valleys and connect to St. Charles Trail toward St. Charles Peak. A nearby lodge offers paddle and rowboat rentals, groceries and a restaurant, and there are golf courses roughly 15 minutes away. Practical details matter here: La Vista has 25 campsites in all 13 that serve both RVs and tents, 2 strictly RV sites, and 10 tent-only sites. RV sites include electric hookups; every site has a picnic table and a campfire ring, and the campground provides vault toilets and drinking water. Walk-in tent sites are 15 to 50 yards from their parking spurs. Because this is National Forest/Grasslands country, drones (UAS) are regulated and users must follow Forest Service rules and recreational drone guidance. Reservations and cancellations are handled through Recreation.gov: cancellations made more than two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; cancellations the day before or on arrival incur a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount); no-shows are charged a $20 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night. Refund requests must be submitted within seven days after your reservation ends; card refunds go back to the original payment card, while check or cash refunds are issued by mailed Treasury check (which can take 6 8 weeks). In the event of an emergency closure, all fees are refundable and staff will attempt to notify visitors.
