“Was not able to use the site I had reserved (#9). Storms and flooding the week before messed up the campground and caused clearance issues at the site. Moved to #13 which was easier to enter. Bathroom was very clean but a long walk. Camp host was helpful. ”
“Conveniently located near Chimney Rock National Monument. Clean restroom!”

Ute Campground sits on U.S. Highway 160 directly across from the Chimney Rock National Monument entrance, about 15 miles west of Pagosa Springs and 25 miles east of Bayfield, with Haystack Mountain rising immediately behind the site. The campground occupies hilly forest terrain at the reservation border shared with the Southern Ute Nation, where Ponderosa pines, Gambel oak, Rocky Mountain juniper and pockets of meadow frame views toward Chimney Rock. This is the only Forest Service access onto Haystack Mountain, and the location makes Ute a convenient base for a wide range of San Juan National Forest recreation: hiking with Chimney Rock vistas, ATV, motorcycle and mountain-bike routes on the Turkey Springs and Devil Mule Horse Mountain trail systems, stream fishing and, a few miles away on the Piedra River, a natural hot spring. Note that while the broader forest supports horseback riding and horse camping, horses and pack animals are not allowed inside this campground; anglers can also access tribal waters at Lake Capote and portions of the Piedra River with appropriate Southern Ute permits. The campground has 23 total campsites, and all 23 sites accommodate both RVs and tents; sites are spaced apart beneath a Ponderosa canopy and most include a picnic table and a fire ring, with some sites outfitted with additional grills. Facilities are simple but functional: one potable water station under pressure, and two pairs of vault toilets serve the loop. There's also a group area with capacity for up to 32 people, a group picnic area and two fire rings. Drive-up access from Hwy 160 makes the campground easy to reach, and stays are limited to 28 days at first-come, first-served sites and 12 days on reservation sites. Cancellation and no-show policies are administered through Recreation.gov: individual campsite cancellations up to 2 days before the reservation incur a $10.00 fee; canceling the day before or the day of arrival results in a $10.00 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount paid); group overnight cancellations less than 14 days before arrival similarly pay a $10.00 service fee and forfeit the first night. No-shows are assessed a $20.00 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's rate, and refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within 7 days of the reservation end date. Pets are allowed but must be leashed; for seasonal opening dates, site-specific directions, or to make a reservation, check Recreation.gov before you go.
