“Nice campground with a lot of trees and close walk to amenities. Good, central location to explore both parts of national park. Campsite 39 was just across the way from a great sunset view.”
“Group camping at the neighboring site was loud and obnoxious about personal drama throughout the night. ”

At 6,500 feet in the mixed evergreen forest of sugar pine, incense cedar, fir and giant sequoia, Sunset Campground sits three miles east of the Big Stump entrance to Kings Canyon National Park and begins many classic park excursions within easy reach. A one-mile trail from the campground leads to the General Grant Tree the Nation's Christmas Tree and the living memorial to veterans and other paths within walking distance head to Ella Falls (a 50-foot cascade) and Panoramic Point. The site layout is practical and straightforward: the campground has 149 sites total 83 that accommodate both RVs and tents, 4 RV-only sites, and 62 tent-only sites. Flush toilets and potable water are on site, but food storage is taken seriously here because of abundant wildlife (black bear, mule deer, squirrels and many birds); each campsite has a food locker measuring 47" long x 33" deep x 28" high, and the two group sites (A & B) include six picnic tables, fire rings and six bear boxes. Group sites are tent-only, have paved parking areas (no RVs allowed into the sites), hold 15 30 people each, and are located across the street from Grant Grove Village; vehicles are not permitted to drive into sites for unloading, so plan to carry coolers and gear a short distance. Practicalities you'll want to note: entrance fees apply to the park (examples: $35 per vehicle for a 1 7 day pass, $20 per person on foot or bike, $30 per motorcycle) and individual camping is $32 per night ($16 per night for holders of a valid lifetime Access Pass or Senior Pass). Group sites rent for a $60 flat rate; the 50% Senior/Access Pass discount does not apply to group bookings. Reservations are charged in full at booking and a $10 service fee applies to changes or cancellations; late cancellation rules differ for individual and group sites (individual late cancellations between midnight the day before arrival and the day after arrival incur a $10 fee and forfeit the first night's use fee; group-site cancellations within 14 days of arrival forfeit the first night's fee and incur the $10 service fee). If a reserved site remains vacant 24 hours after the arrival date it will be cancelled and you will be charged for the first night plus a $10 cancellation fee (call 559-565-4357 if you expect to arrive late to prevent cancellation). Beyond the campground you can spend an hour driving to the Giant Forest and the General Sherman tree, 30 minutes to fish at Hume Lake, or plan longer outings to Cedar Grove, Converse Basin and the Chicago Stump; the Crystal Caves are listed at about a two-hour drive from the campground (reserve cave tickets in advance on Recreation.gov). The parks offer a wide range of activities from day hikes and wildlife viewing to auto touring, climbing, fishing, horseback riding and horse camping so Sunset makes a convenient base for both short walks and longer backcountry plans.
