About

Princess Campground sits at about 5,900 feet on the edge of a broad meadow in the Indian Basin Grove, roughly three miles northwest of Hume Lake and reached from Highway 180 east of Fresno toward Grant's Grove. The nearby Hume Lake an 87-acre impoundment originally built to support a past commercial logging operation and now part of the Kings River watershed anchors the recreation in this section of the southern Sierra. Within a short walk of the camp entrance the Indian Basin Grove Interpretive Trail provides an accessible, paved half-mile loop with an additional half-mile extension that threads through the grove and meadow; at Hume Lake itself you'll find a 2.6-mile loop with interpretive signs and benches, plus opportunities for fishing, non-motorized boating, hiking and mountain biking. The broader Sequoia National Forest offers a wide range of activities biking, horseback riding and horse camping, interpretive programs, off-highway vehicle routes, and even overnight stays in fire lookouts or cabins in other locations so Princess is a good base for both short outings and longer backcountry plans. The campground's layout is divided into several loops and contains a total of 81 sites: 63 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 18 tent-only sites. Sites are shaded and some look out across Hume Lake while others face the meadow; parking stands are dirt and gravel. There's an amphitheater for evening programs or group gatherings, and campground hosts and comment forms are available on site; the facility is operated by Rocky Mountain Recreation Company (a division of ExplorUS). Because fees, reservation windows and seasonal access can change, call the campground for the latest information at (661) 261-0507 or consult the operator's online resources before you go. Princess also makes a convenient jumping-off point for day trips to Kings Canyon and Sequoia national parks, the Giant Sequoia National Monument, General Grant Grove and nearby attractions such as Boyden Caverns and the Giant Sequoia Mercantile for maps, supplies and local guides.
