“Our first experience with desert camping. We loved it. Site 5 was beautiful, close to bathroom and interesting rock formations. Vault bathroom was clean and stink free. We will be back.”
“Any opportunity to stay at Ryan campground over the other Joshua tree sites is welcomed. Many sites are small, and there are many climbers who come to Ryan to climb for the day, but the beauty of the area is iconic. ”

Ryan Campground sits among the steep, weathered boulders that give Joshua Tree its distinctive skyline, with campsites set on flat, sandy ground squeezed between towers of granite that glow in soft pastels at dawn and dusk. At about 4,400 feet elevation, the site offers immediate access to scrambling and climbing terrain Cape Rock and Ryan Mountain rise nearby and several short trails start right from the campground so it's a favorite spot for families and climbers who want to be close to the rock features. The small facility contains 30 sites in total: 20 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 10 tent-only sites. Nights are dark and well suited to star-watching, and day visitors should watch for common desert animals such as lizards, rattlesnakes, scorpions, ravens, squirrels and the occasional desert tarantula; larger predators like bobcats and mountain lions are present in the park but seldom seen near people. Because Ryan is one of the park's four reservation-only campgrounds, you should book ahead and download the NPS app for trail maps and up-to-date information; the Park's "Plan Like a Park Ranger" guidance is also recommended. The campground has no RV hookups and no drinking water on site, and the nearest town with supplies and potable water is Twentynine Palms, about 17 miles away. Sites allow up to six people and two vehicles, though several sites are compact and may not accommodate those maximums check site details when you reserve. Seasonal visitation peaks from October through May when daytime temperatures typically range from the 70s to 90s and nights cool to the 40s 60s; summer is the off-season because of high desert heat. Reservation policies include a $10 service fee withheld from any refund; switching dates entirely outside your original reservation carries a $10 change fee, while extending or shortening reserved dates (if they include days from the original booking) usually does not. Late cancellations (the day before or day of arrival) incur the $10 fee and forfeit the first night's use fee (one-night reservations are forfeited in full), changes cannot be made online once a reservation date has begun, and no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's recreation fee and cancellation of the entire reservation.
