Orange- and pink-hued boulders rise in dramatic piles around Indian Cove Group, shaping a campsite that feels carved into the same geology that draws rock climbers here year after year. Thirteen group sites sit on flat, sandy ground among those towering rocks, and the layout gives easy access to dozens of short climbs and scrambling routes as well as a small interpretive trail that begins inside the campground. Hikers will find several trailheads nearby and non-climbers have plenty of boulders to explore and photograph; after dark the high desert's clear skies make this a strong choice for star-gazing and night photography. At 3,200 feet elevation the interior of Joshua Tree around Indian Cove tends to be warmer than some other park areas most visitors come October through May when daytime highs commonly land in the 70 90°F range and nights cool to the 40 60°F band while summer brings intense heat and is the park's slow season. Expect desert wildlife encounters during cooler months: lizards, occasional rattlesnakes and scorpions, ravens and squirrels, desert tarantulas, and the possibility (though rare) of bobcats or mountain lions passing through. Practical details matter here: although official campsite records show all 13 group sites listed for both tent and RV use, the campground has no hookups or potable water on site, and an emergency phone and water are located about two miles away at the ranger station; Twentynine Palms supplies groceries and services less than ten miles from the campground. Indian Cove is one of three group campgrounds in Joshua Tree that can be reserved year-round; group fees run $35 $40 per night depending on capacity, and park entrance into the main portion of Joshua Tree is $30 per vehicle in addition to camping fees (no entrance fee is collected at the Indian Cove loop itself). Pay attention to reservation rules: a $10 service fee applies to changes, cancellations more than 48 hours before arrival incur a $10 fee, and cancellations within 48 hours are charged $10 plus the first night's fee; group cancellations less than 14 days out forfeit the first night and pay a $10 fee. No-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and the first night's recreation fee and the reservation will be cancelled if your plans change, call the campground at 760-367-5554 before noon the day after your scheduled arrival. Before you go, download the NPS app for maps and on-route information so you can find access roads and nearby climbs once you turn off Highway 62 onto Indian Cove Road.
