Black Rock Campground sits on Joshua Tree National Park's northern edge at about 4,000 feet, among one of the park's densest stands of Joshua trees. The trees' sculptural forms and the surrounding granite outcrops create dramatic silhouettes at sunrise and sunset, and the forest produces showy clusters of white blooms in early spring. Because of its elevation and mix of sun and shade, Black Rock is a favored stop for hikers, birders, horseback riders and climbers several trails radiate from the area with views down into the low desert and toward the high peaks around Palm Springs, and popular climbing areas are within roughly a half-hour drive. Wildlife is part of the experience: desert tortoises inhabit the region alongside lizards, rattlesnakes, scorpions, coyotes, ravens and nocturnal creatures such as tarantulas; bobcats and mountain lions occur in the park but are seldom seen. The campground's northern position and relatively dark skies also make it a good place for stargazing outside the brighter lights of the Coachella Valley. Practical conveniences are straightforward and campground-focused: Black Rock has 94 campsites in total 44 sites set up for both RVs and tents and 50 tent-only sites and it is one of the park's campgrounds that requires reservations year-round. The loop is RV-friendly with flush toilets and a dump station but offers no electric or water hookups; drinking water is available on site (one of two campgrounds in the park to provide it). Showers and laundry aren't on-site but are available in Yucca Valley about five miles away. Reservations, cancellations and changes follow the park's standard policies: there is a $10 service fee withheld for cancelled reservations and late cancellations typically forfeit the first night's fee; changing dates outside your original reservation can incur a $10 change fee; no-shows are charged a $20 service fee and lose the first night's recreation fee. Black Rock is staffed during operating periods you can call local staff at (760) 367-3001 and visitors are advised to download the NPS app before coming for maps and trail information, to plan like a park ranger, and to expect the busiest season from October through May when daytime highs are commonly 70 90°F and nights cool to 40 60°F.
