Indian Cove Campground sits amid the towering boulder piles that define this part of Joshua Tree, with campsites on a flat, sandy surface threaded between steep, sculpted rocks formed by ancient volcanic action and shaped by wind and rain. At about 3,200 feet elevation the interior of the park here tends to be warmer than higher-elevation spots, which helps explain why climbers gravitate to the many routes that begin right from the campground; several hiking trails and a short interpretive nature loop also depart from the site. Wildlife sightings are typical of the desert lizards, ravens, ground squirrels and the occasional tarantula or scorpion in cooler months while larger predators such as bobcats and mountain lions are present but rarely seen. Nights are notably dark and clear, making the rock faces and pastel morning and evening light rewarding subjects for photography and the sky excellent for star-gazing; before you go, download the NPS app for trail maps and up-to-date information. Practical details matter here: Indian Cove requires reservations year-round and provides a total of 97 campsites 76 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 21 tent-only sites with a per-site limit of six people and two vehicles (some sites are small, so check site details before booking). There are no electrical or water hookups and no potable water in the campground; the ranger station about two miles away has drinking water and an emergency phone, and the town of Twentynine Palms is under 10 miles for groceries and supplies. Fees and reservations follow Recreation.gov policies: a $10 service fee is withheld from refunds for cancellations; switching dates entirely outside your original reservation carries a $10 change fee, while extensions or shortenings that include original dates usually do not; cancelling the day before or on arrival incurs a $10 fee and forfeits the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount), and no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee, forfeit the first night's fee, and lose the entire reservation. Plan visits during the October May window for pleasant daytime temperatures (roughly 70 90°F, dropping to 40 60°F at night); summer is the hottest, least-used season.
