Jumbo Rocks Campground sits amid the giant granite formations that define this part of Joshua Tree National Park, at about 4,380 feet elevation on a flat, sandy floor punctuated by towers of boulders and narrow canyons. The developed loop contains 119 individual campsites: 57 sites set up for both RVs and tents, 1 RV-only site, and 61 tent-only sites; the park allows up to six people and two vehicles per site, though some sites are compact and won't accommodate that maximum, so check individual site details when you reserve. There are no water spigots or electrical hookups in the campground, and the nearest services are in Twentynine Palms about 12 miles away, so come prepared with extra water and fuel. Winters (October May) draw most visitors when daytime highs commonly reach the 70s 90s and nights fall into the 40s 60s; summer is hot and considered the park's off-season. Jumbo Rocks is centrally located in the park interior roughly 18 miles from the West Entrance and about 8 miles from the North Entrance accessed from the Highway 62 corridor near Twenty-nine Palms making it a convenient base for exploring other park features. The campground is especially popular with climbers, families and anyone who likes to scramble over rocks at close range: several short hiking routes and an interpretive loop begin near campsites, and the surrounding formations are prime for bouldering and sunset light that brings out soft pastels in the stone. With clear desert skies, the site is also excellent for star-gazing, and common desert fauna you might encounter in cooler months include lizards, rattlesnakes, scorpions, ravens, ground squirrels and tarantulas; larger carnivores such as bobcats and mountain lions live in the park but are seldom seen. Jumbo Rocks requires reservations year-round; cancellations made prior to arrival can be processed online or via the call center but a $10 service fee is withheld from refunds. Changes made outside the cut-off window may incur a $10 change fee if switching to entirely different dates; extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates generally carries no fee. Late cancellations (the day before or the day of arrival) will be charged a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount), and no-shows forfeit the reservation, incur a $20 service fee, and lose the first night's recreation fee. Once a reservation date has begun it cannot be changed online; if the site is staffed, on-site personnel may or may not be able to assist.
