“Best view of the night sky I’ve ever seen. ”
“Did motorcycle camping and there was plenty of space and it's pretty quiet spot. I wish the table was closer to the fire pit. But overall very good spot, not far to drinking water, trash and bathrooms.”
“Very great location, extremely large lots not attached to the others, 50 Amps, water, dump station, in a fantastic landscape all around us. Very good price. We will be back ”

Cottonwood Campground sits at about 3,000 feet on the southern, lower edge of Joshua Tree National Park in the Colorado Desert, where the landscape opens into flat, shrub-dotted desert rather than the giant stacked boulders and sculpted Joshua trees found farther north. Its 59 sites (58 suitable for both RVs and tents, plus one tent-only site) each include a metal fire ring and a picnic table; there are no electrical hookups, but drinking water and flush toilets are available. The site's low elevation and sparse vegetation mean spring wildflowers often appear here earlier than elsewhere in the park (typically between February and the end of March, depending on winter rains), and the campground's distance from towns keeps light pollution to a minimum conditions that consistently draw amateur astronomers and people who want wide, dark sky views. Temperatures are most comfortable from October through May (daytime highs commonly 70 90°F, nights 40 60°F); summer is the park's hot season and far less popular. For maps and planning tools, the NPS recommends downloading the park app before you arrive. Recreation-wise, Cottonwood is prized for stargazing and wildflower viewing; several trailheads begin at the campground and many more are a one- to two-hour drive into other parts of the park. The broader park supports auto touring, biking, climbing, hiking, horse camping and horseback riding, picnicking and wildlife viewing, so Cottonwood can be a quiet base for a variety of day trips. The campground is relatively easy to reach off Interstate 10 use the Mecca/Twentynine Palms exit (I-10 exit 168) and follow park signs; that exit is roughly 25 miles east of Indio. Reservations are required year-round and come with standard NPS booking rules: cancelations carry a $10 service fee withheld from refunds (late cancellations made the day before or on the day of arrival incur the $10 fee and forfeit the first night's use fee, and one-night reservation cancellations forfeit the entire amount paid); no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee, forfeit the first night's fee, and lose the entire reservation. You can change dates for a $10 fee if the new dates fall entirely outside your original reservation; smaller adjustments that include original dates or site swaps at the same rate generally incur no charge. The General Patton Memorial Museum is the closest town attraction, about 12 miles away in Chiriaco, if you want a break from the desert.
