Hallsted Campground sits at about 2,300 feet in the Feather River Canyon on the north slope of the Sierra Nevada, set among mature pine and fir that shade the 20 campsites. All 20 sites are configured to accommodate both tents and RVs, and recent renovations have widened and lengthened most spurs to make maneuvering trailers easier; multiple sites now offer electrical hookups. Standard campsite furnishings picnic tables and campfire rings with grills are provided, and the campground has modern flush toilets, brand-new shower facilities and drinking water. A pleasant walking path winds through the trees and drops down to the North Fork of the Feather River, and several sites run parallel to the river so you can fall asleep to river sounds and watch for the local wildlife that moves through the forest. For recreation, the North Fork of the Feather River close to camp is popular for trout fly-fishing and for swimming on warm days; the campground's proximity to the Feather River National Scenic Byway also makes it a good base for scenic drives that trace the historic Oroville Quincy railroad corridor and the old hydroelectric powerhouses carved into the canyon. Practical amenities are nearby: a general store in Twain is less than a half-mile away for basic supplies, while Quincy about 17 miles east on Highway 70 is the nearest town for fuel and larger services. Hallsted is reached from Highway 70 (roughly 65 miles east of Oroville), and because site features and seasonal access can change, check the Forest Service or recreation.gov for current fees, reservation options and any seasonal restrictions before you go.
