Crystal P ★ 4 · Aug 2025Site was great. Plenty of space for trailers, tents, Rv, boats etc. The only downsides are: it's right on the highway and there is a recreation permit road that makes a loop that goes right between the campsite and everyone can use bathrooms. That road goes next to the site and people who have no proper etiquette when it comes to outdoors, dusted us out a couple times. Others slowed down as to not kick up a bunch of dirt. Other than that, it was great. Nice big fire pit, lots of picnic tables bolted to the ground. Tons of trash cans that got checked daily. We will probably stay here again when they aren't working on every road around the lake
Robert S ★ 4 · Sep 2023This was our first time to Lake Almanor and loved the experience. The campsite was quiet, clean, and well-kept. The sites were far enough in spacing that although you could see other campers, you could still feel as if you were in the wilderness; in addition, it was quiet enough that wildlife and birds came around. Would definitely choose this location again.
Debbie H ★ 4 · Sep 2023We had a wonderful week at Lake Almanor. The best part was our camp host, Steve! He went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. Starting with our arrival and his welcoming greeting, to showing us to our campsite, making sure everything was satisfactory, to giving fantastic recommendations on things to do and see in the area-Steve is definitely the best camp host we have ever encountered!! The weather was perfect in September and the lake and boat launch are close by. The Chester area has many great restaurants but the Kronenkrik Koffehaus is the best Danish bakery around. Although there are no hookups in the South Loop, where we stayed, there is water available close to the campsites and a dump station nearby. Now for the negative part: most of the flush toilets in the campground are broken and the US Forest Service doesn’t seem to care. It has been reported multiple times but nothing has been done, it was an inconvenience for us, but we had options with our motorhome; our tent camping neighbors weren’t so lucky-it was a long hike (or drive) to the closest porta potty or vault toilet. Very sad that the Forest Service can’t do their job and get these repaired.
This weekend (Fri, Oct 30 – Sun, Nov 1): First come, first served. The listing marks this stay first come, first served — no online reservations.

Almanor Campground sits on the west shore of Lake Almanor at about 4,540 feet in Lassen National Forest, with a mix of shaded stands of mixed conifers and grassy meadows that often host wildflowers. The campground caters to families and groups: there are 21 campsites in total 19 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 tent-only sites plus a separate group site. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; there are no electrical or water hookups for RVs. Visitors will find accessible vault toilets, drinking water, an on-site amphitheater, and limited parking; many sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so plan accordingly. Recreation centers on Lake Almanor's 28,000 acres of open water: boating, swimming, water skiing and sailing are all common here, and a public boat ramp sits adjacent to the north campground for easy launching. The shoreline next to the campground is mostly rocky with some small sandy patches for wading. Anglers come for trout, bass, salmon and catfish in both the lake and nearby streams, and the Lake Almanor Recreation Trail an approximately 11-mile non-motorized route along the west shore can be accessed from inside the campground and offers open views toward Dyer Mountain and Lassen Peak. The campground is roughly 12 miles from the town of Chester and is most easily reached by heading south from Chester on Highway 89 to the Almanor Drive area; for up-to-date information on fees, seasonal openings and reservations, check with Lassen National Forest before you go.
