“It's a lovely campground. The size of the sites is generous, though mostly not flat. ”
“spacious campsites, quite and clean bathrooms. Downside is only 1 shower stall and no water spigot in the campsite we chose, it’s in campsite across.”

GLORY HOLE RECREATION AREA, NEW MELONES LAKE
Open in Google Maps ↗
Glory Hole Recreation Area sits on the eastern shore of New Melones Lake along Highway 49 between the historic Gold Rush towns of Sonora and Angels Camp, at roughly 1,100 feet in the Foothill Oak Woodland. The lake itself covers about 12,500 surface acres with roughly 100 miles of shoreline, and the surrounding terrain alternates between rolling oak-covered hills and steep marble cliffs. Summer daytime highs commonly run in the mid-80s to triple digits, while winter days are milder (32 60°F), so water-focused activities dominate warm months: a full-service marina with fuel and boat rentals, two boat launch ramps with parking, a swim beach and a fish-cleaning station make Glory Hole a base for boating, wakeboarding, waterskiing, sailing, kayaking and year-round fishing. The recreation area also offers roughly 30 miles of hiking and biking trails, equestrian access in nearby mitigation areas, an amphitheater for ranger talks, horseshoe pits in the Ironhorse campground, and nearby natural attractions such as Natural Bridges and the Table Mountain Trail for day trips. The campground complex is divided into two developed loops Big Oak and Ironhorse that together provide 142 sites: Big Oak is made up of three groupings (sites 90 112 with 23 sites, 113 132 with 20 sites and 133 144 with 12 sites) and Ironhorse is split across several ranges (1 7, 23 44 and 60 69 totaling 37 sites; 45 59 and 80 89 totaling 25 sites; and 8 22 and 70 79 totaling 25 sites). Across the recreation area there are 67 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, 55 RV-only sites, and 20 tent-only sites; no sites have utility hookups. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring and shade trees, and campers share potable water and modern restrooms with flush toilets (showers are available in selected facilities). Sites accommodate up to eight people and two vehicles; dogs are allowed but must be leashed. Entrance gates open at 4:00 a.m. and close at 9:00 p.m. (exit gates remain open), ranger-guided programs run year round with evening campground programs during summer, and reservations, fee information and all changes or cancellations are handled through Recreation.gov (see the New Melones camping page for current fees).
