Acorn Campground sits in the sun-baked brush of the Sierra Nevada foothills less than an hour east of Stockton, about 30 miles along CA-26 before you drop toward New Hogan Dam. The campground's 127 campsites are all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, spread between two loops A-WESA with 57 sites and EAST with 70 so whether you want a spot closer to the water or a quieter site amid chaparral you have options. Sites are a short walk from the lake shoreline, where clear water offers relief from the region's warm, dry summers (temperatures often climb above 90°). Onsite conveniences include drinking water, accessible flush toilets and coin-operated showers; for current fees, reservation windows and any seasonal restrictions, check with the park headquarters (2713 Hogan Dam Road, Valley Springs) or the campground office (3027 South Petersburg Road) before you go. The big draw here is New Hogan Lake itself: launch ramps around the reservoir make boating and water sports easy, and the broad surface is well suited to water-skiing, wakeboarding and jet skiing. Anglers can fish year-round for stripers, bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish some of the biggest catches are surprisingly close to shore in less than 25 feet of water. On land, a network of trails serves a range of users: an easy three-mile connector links the park office to Acorn Campground, longer equestrian loops start nearby, and mountain and beginner bicycle routes run along the west side of the lake and the group camp area; trail guides are available at the park office. Wildlife viewing is active here grey fox, mule deer, turkey and wintering bald eagles are among the species you may spot, and the south shore is designated for wildlife viewing. For supplies and services, Valley Springs has groceries, fuel and camping needs, and historic Mother Lode attractions such as Carson Hill and the Black Bart Inn are within easy driving distance.
