“Actually stayed at Big Oak . Was still awesome Had the campground to ourselves, went after holiday weekend rented a patio boat and enjoyed the water ”
“Only 3 campsites occupied the day after Memorial Day and I was the only camper on the upper loop with a view of the lake so the campground was very quiet ”
“I spent 2 nights camping at Tuttle Town and had a great experience! The campground was peaceful, clean, and well-maintained, easy access to restrooms. It’s a great spot for a quiet getaway and enjoying nature.”

TUTTLETOWN RECREATION AREA
Open in Google Maps ↗
Tuttletown Recreation Area sits along the western shore of New Melones Lake at about 1,100 feet, where oak woodlands and rolling foothills meet roughly 100 miles of reservoir shoreline. The campground contains 161 sites total: 108 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 53 tent-only sites. Camps are grouped into Acorn (two loops of 34 sites each), Manzanita (one loop of 23 sites and another of 32), and Chamise (one loop of 19 sites and another of 17), plus two reservable group areas (Fiddleneck and Oak Knoll, one group site each). Individual sites include picnic tables, fire rings, shade trees, shared water spigots and flush toilets, and selected restrooms have showers; sites can hold up to eight people and two vehicles but do not offer electrical or sewer hookups. Pets are permitted but must be kept on leash, and recreation area gates operate on a set schedule (gates close at 9:00 PM and reopen at 4:00 AM; exits remain open at all times). The recreation area supports a wide range of on- and off-water activities: a boat launch with parking, an RV dump station and fish-cleaning station are on-site, and the broader New Melones complex is known for year-round fishing, boating and water-sports (wakeboarding, waterskiing, jet skiing, sailing), plus kayaking and swimming. Trails nearby support hiking, mountain biking and equestrian use in the adjacent Peoria Wildlife Mitigation Area; noteworthy natural features within a short drive include Natural Bridges and the Table Mountain lava-flow trail. A visitor center/museum on Highway 49 (open daily, with ranger-led nature hikes and interpretive programs year-round and evening campground programs in summer) offers exhibits on local natural history and the Gold Rush-era "submerged town" of Melones. Make reservations and handle any changes or cancellations through Recreation.gov (fees and additional planning details are listed on the Bureau of Reclamation's New Melones camping page); a disc-golf course was noted as under construction in spring 2021, and an EV charging station is available in the Lupine day-use area. For access, Tuttletown is reached from Highway 49 between Sonora and Angels Camp via Reynolds Ferry Road.
