Prairie Creek Campground sits beneath moss-draped live oaks along the shore of Woodruff Lake, a stretch of the Alabama River that runs through the region's Black Prairie Belt. The landscape here alternates between rolling grasslands and stands of hardwood and pine, and the campground's waterfront location makes the lake the focal point: anglers come for bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish, boaters and water-skiers use the on-site ramp and dock, and birders and wildlife viewers follow the shoreline and nearby trails. For hunters and sportsmen, the 12,500-acre Lowndes Wildlife Management Area is a short drive away and offers season-dependent opportunities for whitetail deer, wild turkey, hogs and various small game and waterfowl. On any given weekend you'll find families launching boats, anglers tending lines from the dock, and hikers or cyclists exploring the quieter roads and paths that bisect the prairie and forest mosaic. The campground provides 62 campsites in total: 55 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and seven tent-only sites, and all sites have electric hookups. Facilities are straightforward and family-friendly flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, a dump station and laundry plus a sandy beach, boat ramp and dock, picnic shelter, playground and a basketball court. Because this is a managed Corps of Engineers project within the Alabama River Lakes system, fees, reservation rules and seasonal availability can vary; call or check the managing office before you go for up-to-date information on campsite fees, reservation windows and any access restrictions. Prairie Creek is roughly 25 miles west of Montgomery off Highway 80 (follow signs from County Road 29), making it an accessible lakeside base for fishing, boating, hiking, picnicking and general wildlife viewing in this less-developed corner of Alabama's river country.
