Gunter Hill Campground sits on Catoma Creek among stands of hickory and pine along the backwaters of the Alabama River, offering a quiet, wooded setting in Alabama's southwest hill country. The campground contains 140 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and is laid out in two loops Anti (65 sites) and Catoma (75 sites). The Catoma loop (sites 1 75) has been recently renovated with concrete pads and sewer hookups; in addition to electric hookups throughout the campground, visitors will find flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, a dump station and laundry facilities. A covered picnic shelter is available for family gatherings, and the day-use areas include a playground and a basketball court. Gunter Hill is open year-round in a generally mild climate, and it's reached from I-65 via US-80 west (about nine miles from the exit), then a short county road into the park. Recreation at Gunter Hill centers on the river: a boat ramp gives easy access to Catoma Creek and the Alabama River for boating, water sports and abundant fishing for crappie, bass and catfish. For hunters and wildlife watchers, the nearby Lowndes Wildlife Management Area spans roughly 12,500 acres and provides prime hunting for deer, turkey and hogs as well as opportunities for waterfowl and small-game pursuits; birding and wildlife viewing are strong here year-round. Hikers and casual walkers will appreciate shoreline and forested routes for short excursions, while picnic facilities, play areas and nearby regional parks across the Alabama River Lakes system support biking, broader hiking, and family water recreation.
