“The campground was about what we expected. Barking dogs and people running noisy generators annoyed us.”

Half Moon Lake Campground sits on the northeast shore of its namesake basin in the Bridger-Teton National Forest at about 7,600 feet, where glacially formed shoreline meets the lower foothills of the Wind River Mountains. The shore and surrounding slopes are a patchwork of lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir and aspen interspersed with sagebrush and rocky outcrops, and willow thickets screen most campsites. The campground contains 17 sites in total, and all 17 sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents; each site includes a picnic table and a metal fire ring. Three sites offer direct lake access, and two vault toilets are located inside the loop; the boat launch with a dock and additional vault toilets sits about a half mile down the main road. There is no drinking water provided on site, and proper food storage is required, so plan to bring your own water and secure food against wildlife. Recreation centers on the lake: anglers fish for rainbow, brown and lake trout (along with other native species), while boaters, swimmers, kayakers and paddle-boarders use the water; the boat launch half a mile away is the primary put-in. A well-regarded hiking trail suitable for a range of abilities begins roughly two miles down the gravel road from the campground, and the broader Bridger-Teton National Forest offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, auto touring, biking, horseback riding, hunting and winter sports depending on season. The campground is reached from Pinedale by following the Fremont Lake/Half Moon Lake corridor past the Pinedale Ranger District and continuing roughly 12 miles northeast to the dirt spur that leads the last two miles into the site. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations and seasonal openings check with the Pinedale Ranger District or the Forest Service before you go; for cultural attractions and local events, the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale and the annual Green River Rendezvous (July) are nearby highlights.
