“Beautiful location! Level site with table and covered area ”

Vicki S 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Beautiful view, clean bathrooms, covered shelters at each campground. Do be aware that each campsite is a double, so you may be very close to another group. ”

Ali P 5 · Aug 2025 · Recreation.gov

“The view was amazing. The sites were very small with no internet or connectivity, but we enjoyed our short stay. ”

About

Firehole Canyon Campground sits on the far northeastern shore of Flaming Gorge Reservoir within the Flaming Gorge Recreation Area of Ashley National Forest, at about 6,300 feet in a high-desert landscape of sagebrush and scattered Russian olive. The site's location puts it squarely by the water: a small beach and an adjacent boat ramp make launching for boating, canoeing, water skiing, or a shore lunch straightforward, and anglers will find easy access for reservoir fishing from both shore and boat. The setting is defined more by red-rock bluffs and open, sunlit views of the reservoir than by tree canopy, so daytime shade is limited and late-day light highlights the cliffs. Flaming Gorge Dam and its visitor center including guided tours of the hydroelectric plant and exhibits on regional history are nearby, and the broader Ashley National Forest offers opportunities for biking, horseback riding, OHV use, interpretive programs, wildlife viewing and picnicking. The campground contains 36 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents; each site is outfitted with a cabana, picnic table and a campfire ring, while roads and parking spurs inside the campground are paved. On-site amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, trash collection and a dump station, but the listing does not indicate individual utility hookups, so plan accordingly. Access is from U.S. 191 via Forest Road 106 (the campground lies about 10 miles west off U.S. 191), with Rock Springs roughly 29 miles away and Vernal about 95 miles by road check current road conditions before you go. Fees, reservation windows and seasonal openings can change; contact the Ashley National Forest or the Flaming Gorge Recreation Area for up-to-date information and to confirm whether sites are reservable or first-come, first-served. Practical packing notes: expect strong sun and cooler nights at elevation, bring shade options and layered clothing, and come prepared to use the boat ramp and beach if water activities are your main draw.
