What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (4 reviews, ★ 3.0). Not written or edited by us.

“I could not find the campground. There was one sign in Smoot Wyo. I turned and went down a country lane, then came to an area that was very overgrown. There was a bulletin board, and the only road that was visible was a dirt jeep track. There was no sign of anyone in the area.”

Betty B 1 · Sep 2024 · Recreation.gov

“We love this group site and area! We go here every year. ”

About

Cottonwood Group Campsite sits on the east side of the Cottonwood Lake loops, down in the pine-and-aspen canyon below Salt River Pass in western Wyoming. The site is the campground's single group site (the facility lists one total campsite) and is laid out for up to 25 guests; it's most appropriate for tent groups but is also classified to accept both RV and tent use, with space for two vehicles at the site (van-sized vehicles are the largest the site will accommodate). Vault toilets and a drinking-water pump are provided nearby, and if your group brings extra vehicles you can use the adjacent Cottonwood Lake Day Use Area, which holds six additional cars. The west loop of the campground is set up for stock users, with horse corrals, while the group site sits on the far northern edge of the east loop just past the water pump and is also where the motorized trailhead is located. Recreation centers on Cottonwood Lake and the surrounding trail network: the lake supports canoeing and boating for smaller craft and is fished for brook and cutthroat trout, while nearby trails offer hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding; there is also a motorized route open to trail vehicles under 50 inches, and that motorized access departs from the east loop beside the group site. The campground is reached from Afton head south on Highway 89 toward Smoot and follow the signs to Cottonwood Lake; once on the access road you'll cross the Forest boundary after roughly a mile and drive about six more miles to the campground. Specifics on fees, reservations, seasonal openings or road-condition restrictions aren't provided here, so plan to check current conditions and any permit or fee requirements with the Bridger-Teton National Forest office before you go.
