CHEQUAMEGON-NICOLET NATIONAL FOREST
Open in Google Maps ↗
Smith Rapids Campground sits along the fast-flowing South Fork of the Flambeau River at roughly 1,500 feet, with shady, wooded sites that look toward the river and the distinctive Smith Rapids Covered Bridge built in 1991, it's the only glue-laminated town lattice covered bridge in Wisconsin. The campground is small and quietly scaled: eight single-family sites in all, five designed to accommodate both RVs and tents and three set aside as tent-only sites; several spurs are extra-long to make parking trailers or longer rigs easier. Basic comforts are provided picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets and drinking water and a carry-down boat ramp at the site makes canoeing and river fishing especially convenient. Anglers come for walleye, smallmouth bass, redhorse, musky and northern pike, while paddlers can use the river's current to cover long stretches; note that off-road vehicles are not permitted to operate inside the campground itself. The nearest full-service town is Park Falls, about 17 miles away, and the campground is accessed from Highway 70 east of Fifield via Forest Service Road 148. Smith Rapids is also a practical base for exploring the wider Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest. It sits near the 70-mile Flambeau Trail System a mixed-use corridor popular for off-road vehicles, hiking and mountain biking in warmer months and for snowmobiling in winter with rolling terrain, tree-lined corridors, wooden bridge crossings and viewpoints over bogs and lakes. Beyond trail use and paddling the Flambeau, the national forest offers a long list of recreation options including auto touring, biking, boating, horseback riding, hunting, swimming and wildlife viewing. Fee structures, reservation rules and seasonal access can change, so check the Forest Service campground pages and the current recreation fee and permits information before you go to confirm availability, any required passes, and up-to-date directions and maps.
