CHEQUAMEGON-NICOLET NATIONAL FOREST
Open in Google Maps ↗
Sailor Lake Campground occupies two loops along the northwestern shore of a 170-acre lake, sitting at roughly 1,460 feet amid a mixed hardwood stand that shades many sites and frames water views from others. The facility is intentionally rustic: 25 campsites in total, with 22 configured for both RVs and tents and three designated tent-only, and parking spurs that are either grass or gravel. There are no electrical or water hookups; each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring, and the campground provides vault toilets and a potable water source. Sites vary from tucked-away, tree-screened spots to a handful of waterfront openings; some are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so plan accordingly if you need a guaranteed reservation. The Sailor Lake Picnic Area, about a mile south of the campground, hosts a boat ramp and a picnic shelter for larger gatherings or easier lake access. The campground is a popular base for off-highway vehicle riders because it opens directly onto the 70-mile Flambeau Trail System a mix of rolling terrain, wooded corridors, wooden bridges and overlooks that also doubles as a favored snowmobile corridor in winter. On the water, anglers fish for panfish and northern pike, and boaters will find straightforward launch access at the nearby picnic area. Beyond the campground, the larger Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest supports a wide slate of outdoor pursuits hiking, biking, auto touring, horseback riding, hunting, wildlife viewing and overnight stays in fire lookouts or cabins in other parts of the forest so Sailor Lake works well for combining lake time with broader exploration. The site lies about 11 miles southeast of Fifield, reached via State Highway 70 and Forest Road 139; check the Forest Service website or contact the ranger district for current fees, reservations and trail conditions before you go.
