“The campground hosts were wonderful. They were extremely helpful with anything we needed. We had a camper that broke her leg on a hike and the hosts were so considerate. We will go back when we are in the area!!”

Grindstone Campground sits at about 3,800 feet in the Fairwood Valley inside the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, surrounded by mixed hardwoods, hemlock and rhododendron and flanked by pastures and wooded hillsides. The campground gives ready access to trails and streams: the Mount Rogers Trail (7.5 miles) and the short Whispering Waters Nature Trail (0.6 miles) are nearby for day hikes, and several small streams that run just beyond the campsites are known for trout fishing and a shallow creek-side water play area that kids use in warmer months. Families and groups will find an amphitheater, a playground and volleyball courts within the campground, and the wider George Washington & Jefferson National Forest supports a long list of outdoor pursuits from auto touring along the Mount Rogers Scenic Byway to mountain biking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing so Grindstone works well as a base for varied activities rather than a remote, single-purpose stop. The campground totals 82 sites: 81 sites are configured for both RVs and tents and one site is tent-only, and many sites come with the basic amenities campers expect a fire ring with cooking grate, lantern post, picnic table and a tent pad. Standard electric sites are equipped with 30-amp service and water hookups where hookups are functioning; however, Grindstone is currently closed until further notice for facility repairs. Opossum Loop will remain open only for tent campers, but there is no potable water in Opossum, Cottontail and Groundhog Den loops, both Cottontail and Groundhog Den loops are closed entirely, and no dump station is available. Pets are permitted if attended and kept on a leash no longer than six feet. This location is unstaffed; for the latest information on openings, fees and reservations call the forest office at (276) 783-5196. The campground is reached from Marion, Virginia, by heading south on Highway 16 toward the Mount Rogers area and following County Road 603 to the campground entrance.
