Hurricane Campground sits where Hurricane Branch and Comers Creek cut a cool, noisy corridor through stands of hemlock, oak and dense rhododendron, so sites feel sheltered and shaded even on summer afternoons. The campground's short trails put you onto the landscape quickly: the 1.1-mile Hurricane Knob Trail follows the creek for roughly half a mile, crosses two small wooden bridges and climbs to Hurricane Knob (about 2,800 3,050 feet), and the famed Appalachian Trail is within a half-mile of the loop a handy access point to the roughly 2,189-mile National Scenic Trail. Creeks running through the site are stocked with trout, making for easy wading and fishing right from camp, and several groomed grassy fields provide space for games and family activity while still feeling tucked into the forest. Facilities are straightforward and comfortable: 26 campsites in all 19 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 7 tent-only sites each equipped with a lantern pole, picnic table and campfire ring. The campground offers drinking water, flush toilets and hot showers, plus a playing field for informal sports; note that large RVs are not recommended due to site size and the gravel approach. Hurricane Campground lies in southwest Virginia, reachable by traveling south from Marion on State Route 16 to the short gravel spur that leads to the paved entrance, and it functions as a quiet base for the wider George Washington & Jefferson National Forest where you can also pursue biking, climbing, horseback riding, hunting, auto touring, wildlife viewing and other outdoor pastimes. For facility-specific questions, seasonal conditions or regulations, call the campground phone at (276) 783-5196.
