Beartree sits inside the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area amid mixed hardwoods and conifers, with a small creek threading the campground and a 14-acre lake whose tree-lined shore meets the water closely enough for quiet mornings of shoreline fishing. The looped layout spreads sites through the woods so most feel private; there are 82 total campsites (81 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 1 tent-only site). Two named loops Chipmunk Circle (35 sites) and Beaver Flat (38 sites) account for much of that capacity, and a separate group site can host up to 24 guests. Every site includes a picnic table and metal grill, drinking water is available on-site, RV and tent camping are both welcome, and a dump station (no water) sits on the left side of the road just before the contact station as you enter the campground. Recreation at Beartree centers on angling and easy lakeside hiking: the lake has two fishing piers and supports smallmouth bass, sunfish, and stocked trout (rainbow and brown), and only self-propelled boats or craft with electric trolling motors are permitted; state fishing and boating regulations and licensing requirements apply. The Beartree Lake Trail loops the water half of the route is paved for easier walking while the broader George Washington & Jefferson National Forest offers auto touring, biking, horseback riding, climbing, wildlife viewing, and long-distance hiking access (including the nearby Appalachian Trail), plus regional draws like the Virginia Creeper Trail, Hungry Mother State Park, and Grayson Highlands. The campground is reached from the Abingdon/Damascus corridor about 20 miles east of Abingdon along Route 58 on the Mount Rogers Scenic Byway and for facility-specific information on fees, reservations, and seasonal openings you should call (800) 628-7202.
