What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (109 reviews, ★ 5.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Campsites are very spacious with tons of room in between sites. Site 1 has a severe slope of 46” front to back on our 30’ TT. Bring block and mortar if you want to have your RV level and wobble free. The rest of the sites looked level.”

About

Buffalo Park sits on the shore of John H. Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake), a roughly 50,000-acre impoundment with some 800 miles of wooded, cove-cut shoreline where the Roanoke (Staunton) River broadens and meets the Dan. The small park combines a compact overnight loop and year-round day-use area; the campground is open seasonally from May 1 through September 30 while the day-use facilities remain available all year. There are 21 total campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents: 11 electric sites (one is a double) clustered under trees and 10 primitive sites laid out in an open field with limited shade. Two electric sites are paved and accessible. On-site facilities are practical and family-oriented individual restrooms with hot showers, sinks and flush toilets, a small dump station, a swim beach, a picnic shelter with a clear view where the rivers meet, and a boat ramp for launching into the long lake. The park's physical address is 5199 Carter's Point Road, Buffalo Junction, VA, about 10 miles west of Clarksville (gas and groceries are available there), and Buffalo Springs Park, a small Virginia historic site and fountain, is roughly seven miles away. Activities concentrate on the water and the surrounding public lands: Kerr Lake draws anglers after largemouth and striped bass, crappie and catfish, supports boating and water-sports, and the Army Corps of Engineers' surrounding public and wildlife-management areas provide hiking, birding and wildlife viewing; public lands are also open to hunting where state licensing and regulations apply. Practicalities you should plan for include reservation and fee rules handled through Recreation.gov: a $10 service fee is withheld from most refunds; cancelling the day before or the day of arrival incurs the $10 fee and forfeits the first night's approved rate (one-night reservations forfeited in full), and no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's charges. There is no change fee when you extend or shorten a reservation within the original dates or swap sites of the same price, but switching to dates entirely outside the original booking carries a $10 change fee; once a reservation begins it cannot be changed online and on-site staff will assist. Refunds are credited to the original payment method (check or cash refunds are issued by Treasury check and may take 6 8 weeks), and in the event of an emergency closure all fees will be refunded. Between May 1 and September 30 the park is staffed call (434) 374-2063 for local assistance and from October 1 through April 30 the site is unstaffed; for general information during that period call (434) 738-6143.
