Rudd's Creek Campground sits on the Virginia shore of John H. Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake), a 50,000-acre impoundment with some 800 miles of wooded, cove-studded shoreline that stretches 39 miles up the Roanoke River. The campground is roughly 3 miles west of Boydton on Highway 58 and is set in a shaded forested parcel with easy water access: campers have a private boat ramp and a courtesy dock, and a marina is less than a mile away. Onsite family-oriented features include a sandy swimming beach and a picnic shelter, and the larger reservoir supports a wide range of activities boating, water sports and fishing for largemouth and striped bass, crappie and catfish are common draws, while 26 surrounding Wildlife Management Areas and nearby trailheads (the Robert Munford Trail trailhead is about 7 miles away at Eagle Point Landing) provide birding, wildlife viewing and hiking opportunities. Public lands around Kerr are also open to hunting with the appropriate state licenses and seasonal regulations. The campground itself has 98 combined RV and tent sites (all sites accommodate both RVs and tents) with hot showers, flush toilets and a dump station; every electric site includes a water hookup. The loop inventory includes smaller groupings such as Loop C38 with 9 sites and Loop C47 with 6 sites, which helps when choosing a quieter or more compact section of the park. Rudd's Creek is open for camping April 1 through October 31 (the Day Use Park across Hwy 58 is open year-round) and is seasonally staffed; during staffed months call (434) 738-6827, otherwise call (434) 738-6143 for general information. Reservation policies are practical but firm: you can change dates within your original reservation without a fee, but switching to dates entirely outside the original booking incurs a $10 change fee, and cancellations carry a $10 service fee with additional penalties for late cancellations and no-shows (no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate). Roads in and around the campground have very little shoulder, so exercise caution with bicycles and children, and review the refund and early-departure rules through Recreation.gov if your plans may change.
