North Bend Park sits immediately downstream from John H. Kerr Dam on the long, cove-cut shoreline of Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake), about 20 miles west of South Hill, Virginia; the park's street address is 64 North Bend Drive, Boydton, VA 23917 and the Corps Visitor Assistance Center and dam are within easy reach. The campground is the largest on the lake with 234 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, arranged in four distinct loops (Loop A: 40 sites; Loop B: 84 sites; Loop C: 59 sites; Loop D: 49 sites). Practical comforts are in place for multi-night stays: hot showers, flush toilets and an on-site dump station, and each camping area has its own swim beach. Day-use amenities include picnic shelters, a large swim beach, three concrete boat ramps, an amphitheater, a 1.5-mile paved bicycle trail and a disc golf course, while supplies such as gas, groceries, firewood and restaurants are available within a couple of miles or in Boydton and South Hill about 20 minutes away. For local information call (434) 738-0059 or for general information call (434) 738-6143. The park is a good base for boating, water sports and fishing Kerr Lake is known for largemouth and striped bass, crappie and flathead catfish and for wildlife viewing along the Roanoke River tailrace where migrating bald eagles and seasonal osprey are commonly seen. Anglers and hunters should follow Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources regulations; public hunting is allowed on surrounding lands with the appropriate licenses and the reservoir is ringed by 26 Wildlife Management Areas totaling over 10,000 acres. Hikers and cyclists have nearby options too: the 1.5-mile Liberty Nature Trail and the 5.5-mile Robert Munford Trail are a short drive from the campground, and Tailrace Park offers a wheelchair-accessible canoe/kayak launch that is part of the Virginia Blueways Trail. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov; note the reservation policies up front there is no change fee if you extend/shorten within the original dates or switch to a same-price site for the same dates, but switching to entirely different dates incurs a $10 change fee and reservations that include dates beyond the maximum booking window cannot be changed for 18 days after booking. Cancellations made before arrival are refunded minus a $10 service fee; cancelling the day before or the day of arrival forfeits the first night's rate plus the $10 fee (one-night reservations forfeit the full amount), no-shows are assessed a $20 fee and forfeit the first night's rate, and early departures may be eligible for a partial refund through Recreation.gov or by contacting on-site staff.
