“Great campground. Needs more sites!!!!!! Hosts are the best - clean the latrines T, Th, SAT anb Sun; plenty of TP, portable pressure washer makes them super clean. Since so many of the sites are used by RVs, it would be great if they were leveled. Thanks again super hosts!!!”

Maple Canyon Campground sits in a narrow cleft of the Sanpitch Mountains at about 6,700 feet, hemmed in by thick groves of maples and towering conglomerate walls that form more than 40 cliffs ranging from 30 to 300 feet. The facility is small 15 campsites in all with 11 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 4 tent-only sites; among those, Sites 2, 3 and 4 are walk-to tent sites that require carrying gear a short distance from the parking area. There is one group site and several single-family sites, vault toilets are available, and there is no potable water on site, so plan to bring everything you need. Roads and parking spurs are dirt but the campground is accessible by all passenger vehicles; the canyon lies about 3 miles northeast of the town of Freedom, Utah, reached via local roads from Fountain Green or Moroni. Rock climbing is the defining activity here climbers come specifically for the canyon's conglomerate walls and feature routes including the famous Pipe Dream tunnel and the area offers more than 140 bolted routes spanning grades from 5.4 to 5.14. Hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders also use the canyon's three steep loop trails (roughly three to five miles each) to reach overlooks that open east into Sanpete Valley and the Wasatch Plateau. Wildlife viewing is common, and nearby recreation sites include the Sanpitch Recreation Area and Chicken Creek Campground. Because amenities are minimal and seasonal conditions, fees, and reservation policies can change, check the Manti-La Sal National Forest website or recreation.gov for current rules and availability before you go, and remember to bring water, food, and any climbing or packing gear you'll need for the walk-to sites.
