Johnson Creek Camp sits on the shore of Lake O' the Pines in the piney woods of Northeast Texas, within the Ark-La-Tex region near Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. The lake itself formed by Ferrell's Bridge Dam on Big Cypress Bayou covers roughly 18,700 acres of water and about 9,000 acres of surrounding land, so the shoreline here feels spacious and wild even when you're in a developed campground. The site address is 580 Crestwood Loop, Avinger, TX 75657, and the gate house is staffed 10 a.m. 6 p.m. Monday Saturday and noon 6 p.m. Sunday; stop by the gate house first for current information on fees, reservations and any access notices. The campground offers 86 total campsites: 56 RV sites, 21 tent-only sites and 9 sites that can serve both RVs and tents. Restrooms with hot showers are positioned in each section of the park, trash receptacles are provided throughout, and the group camping area includes a covered picnic shelter, restrooms and showers plus 12 RV sites with water and electric hookups. Facilities and activities at Johnson Creek take full advantage of the lake and the surrounding public lands. A boat ramp and sewer dump station make boating straightforward; there's a swimming beach and a playground for families, picnic spots and a specialized sport site for more organized activities, and a concession site is listed among park services. Anglers will find largemouth, spotted and white bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish bank fishing is possible along much of the shore and below the dam on Big Cypress Bayou, and boat anglers have access to the broader reservoir. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars: a variety of resident and migratory species use the lake, and winter brings regular bald eagle sightings. Nearby public lands offer hunting for white-tailed deer, waterfowl and small game (check seasons and regulations before you go), and small towns around the lake Jefferson and Marshall among them provide antique shopping, seasonal festivals and Texas Wildflower Trail drives if you want a break from the water. For up-to-date fee schedules, seasonal availability and reservation rules, confirm details with the gate house or the park's reservation system before your trip.
