“Beautiful lake and campsite. Very relaxing. The comfort station could use some TLC but overall a great experience. ”

Brushy Creek Campground sits on the forested shore of Lake O' the Pines in the Ark-La-Tex portion of East Texas' Pineywoods, where long fingers of water push into pine and hardwood flats. The lake itself covers about 18,700 acres of water and another roughly 9,000 acres of land across five counties Marion, Harrison, Upshur, Morris and Camp and was formed by Ferrell's Bridge Dam on the Big Cypress Bayou as part of regional flood-control works. That mix of open water, bays and wooded shoreline makes the site well suited for boating and water sports from the campground's boat ramp and courtesy dock, and for anglers chasing largemouth, spotted and white bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish; you'll also find shore-fishing opportunities along the lake and below the dam on Big Cypress Bayou. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars bald eagles commonly winter here and are seen in other seasons too and hunters can access nearby public lands for white-tailed deer, waterfowl and small game. Brushy Creek is about a 12-mile drive northwest of Jefferson, TX (the park's address is 189 Brushy Creek Park Rd., Jefferson, TX 75657), and the gate house is staffed 10 a.m. 6 p.m. Monday Saturday and noon 6 p.m. Sunday; check with the gate house or the park website for current fees, reservation policies and seasonal notices. The campground provides a mix of developed sites and day-use features that accommodate a range of camping styles. There are 97 total campsites: 22 that serve both RV and tent campers, 39 designated RV sites and 36 tent sites. Many RV sites offer water and electric hookups, and a portion of the tent sites (12) have electricity available. Restrooms with showers are located in each section of the park, and trash receptacles are placed throughout. Onsite amenities include a playground, a swimming beach, a fishing dock and a sewer dump station, while the boat ramp and courtesy dock put you on the lake quickly for fishing or water sports. The area supports hiking, picnicking and wildlife viewing, and local towns add cultural options Jefferson's antique shops, Mardi Gras Upriver, the Annual Historic Pilgrimage and Christmas Candlelight Tour, and Marshall's Stagecoach Days, Fire Ant Festival and holiday lights plus Texas Wildflower Trail routes on nearby roads.
