Brian H ★ 4 · Jun 2025This was a nice, unoccupied place, even on a holiday. Primitive Campground, no power. That was expected. There were a couple of toilets and a small number of water spouts, not at every site. It was sufficient. I was surprised I could get a 4G and sometimes a 5G Verizon signal at some places on the campground because I could not get a signal for 10 miles on the road. Beautiful lake, quiet calm.

Coffee Mill sits on the north shore of the 750-acre Coffee Mill Lake, where the shore and open water set the scene for small-lake recreation. The recreation area dates to the 1930s for the lake with a developed campground completed in 1968 and some volunteer-built improvements added in the early 1990s. Boat access and a new fishing pier are on site, and the broader day-use and trail network connects you to non-motorized paths and nearby Lake Davy Crockett. Although the recreation area has historically offered multiple campsites and is open year-round, current verified campsite data lists a single campsite (1 total site) that is configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, so this location functions as a compact site that can take a rig or tent camping setup rather than a larger multi-loop campground. Practicalities are important here: Coffee Mill operates strictly on a first-come, first-served basis you must physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim the site, and there are no advance reservations. Fees are collected on-site; where available you may be able to pay by scanning a posted QR code and using the Recreation.gov mobile app's Scan and Pay feature, so download the free Recreation.gov app before you arrive if you want that option (cell service can be limited or nonexistent in remote spots). The setting supports a range of outdoor activities common to the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas: boating and swimming on the lake, fishing from the pier or your boat, day hikes on nearby trails, picnicking, and horseback opportunities and OHV use elsewhere in the forest. Use the general directions from Honey Grove head north on FM 100 and then west on FM 409 to find the entrance on the lake's north side.
