Granger Lake, created when a dam was completed in 1980 and opened to the public in March 1981, spreads across roughly 11,000 acres where the San Gabriel River and Willis Creek feed a long, irregular shoreline carved into the gently rolling hills of the Texas Blackland Prairie. The Willis Creek campground sits on the lake's Willis Creek arm, putting boat ramps and shoreline access within easy reach of most sites; boating, fishing and water sports are the primary draws here, and anglers prize Granger Lake as one of the top five crappie and white bass fisheries in Central Texas. Several wildlife management areas Pecan Grove, San Gabriel, Sore Finger and Willis Creek border the lake, so bring binoculars for birding and wildlife viewing as you explore the shorelines and low, grassy ridges. The park is reached from Interstate 35 via Texas Highway 95; follow Highway 95 north to County Road 346 and head east about four miles to the park entrance. Willis Creek Campground provides 38 campsites total: 28 sites configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, and 10 equestrian sites for visitors with horses. The RV/tent sites offer 20/30-amp electric service and four of those sites include sewer drops at the campsite; the equestrian sites do not have electric or water hookups, so riders should plan to bring their own water and provisions. A group campsite that holds up to 50 people includes water and 20-amp electric but has no RV hookups at the group shelter. Horseback riders will find the Willis Creek Equestrian Area has six marked trails ranging from 1 to 5.5 miles, and the park's activity list includes camping, picnicking, playground facilities, a specialized sport site, and ample opportunities for boating, fishing and wildlife viewing. For the latest on fees, reservations and seasonal access, check the managing agency's website before you go so you can reserve sites and confirm any current regulations.
