Jim Hogg Park sits on the north shore of Georgetown Lake in the central Texas Hill Country, roughly 25 miles north of Austin and within easy reach of Georgetown's services. The lake itself is a reservoir on the north fork of the San Gabriel River; the dam completed in 1979 holds back the river and creates a broad, low-elevation waterbody framed by juniper and hardwood bottoms. Boating is the dominant activity here a public boat ramp gives straightforward lake access for towboats, pontoons or small powerboats and the water supports a healthy fishery: Black bass, White bass, Hybrid stripers, White crappie, Channel and Flathead catfish, with a notable abundance of Smallmouth bass. The 26-mile San Gabriel River Trail threads through dense juniper, prairie grasslands and riparian corridors, wrapping completely around Georgetown Lake via the dam and providing multi-use hiking and biking options; you'll also find picnic shelters for day visits, opportunities for wildlife viewing and, by permit only, seasonal small-game and white-tailed deer hunting. The campground side of Jim Hogg Park is sized for groups and campers alike: there are 143 reservable campsites in total, of which 138 accommodate both RVs and tents and 5 are tent-only sites, plus five large group camping shelters. Essential comforts include flush toilets and showers, and picnic shelters that make it easy to host family cookouts or larger gatherings. Sites are reservable ahead of time, so plan and book in advance; note the reservation and cancellation rules individual campsites canceled up to two days before arrival incur a $10 cancellation fee, while cancellations the day before or on arrival carry a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeit the full amount). Group overnight facilities canceled less than 14 days before arrival also forfeit a night's use fee plus the $10 service fee, and group day-use cancellations inside 14 days forfeit the full day-use fee. Refund requests may be submitted online within seven days after departure (after that, refunds must be handled through the call center), and cancellation fees are non-refundable. For supplies, fuel and dining options, historic Georgetown's square is nearby, and Austin's attractions are a short drive away.
