Mustang Park sits on the south shore of Benbrook Lake amid the region's rolling prairie and gentle creek bottoms, where Mustang Creek feeds into a stretch of wooded shoreline. The park's gently sloping banks and a popular sandy swimming beach make it an easy, low-key spot for water-based activity: anglers fish along Mustang Point, small boats and kayaks can be launched from the ramp, and the open shoreline is often a quiet place for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Though Benbrook Lake's larger recreation area (a short drive from Fort Worth and the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex) offers hiking, camping, and hunting across its public lands, Mustang itself is set up for daytime recreation swimming, picnicking and shoreline fishing are the primary draws here. Facilities at Mustang reflect that day-use focus but are substantial: the park is recorded as having 101 sites (100 tent sites and one site suitable for both RVs and tents) and operates as an open, non-designated day-use area where visitors may set up anywhere including right on the shoreline rather than being confined to fixed table sites or roadways. Amenities include a large group pavilion with utilities, restrooms with showers, and a trailer dump station. Fees are collected at the entrance pay station ($5 per vehicle, $5 boat launch, $2 bicycle; the group shelter is $125 and must be reserved through recreation.gov); after payment place your ticket face up on your dashboard for the duration of your visit. Staffing is limited, the park closes at 10:00 p.m., and for general information you can call (817) 292-2400. If you want cultural diversions after your visit, downtown Fort Worth's museums, botanical gardens, zoo and the Stockyards are all within easy driving distance.
