“The trails were stunning and well kept and camp sites had amazing views! Would highly recommend to any one. Even during the shutdown things we running very smoothly. ”
“Somehow the backcountry site was doue booked and we both had printouts for the same dates and site. Very poor on recreation web site to allow this for such a remote location. ”

Big Bend's backcountry camping puts you well away from pavement and into the raw contrasts of Far West Texas river-carved limestone canyons, low desert plains and the forested Chisos Mountains that rise from roughly 1,800 to nearly 8,000 feet. The park offers 58 designated backcountry campsites in total: 23 sites accommodate vehicle camping (listed as both RV and tent sites) while 35 are tent-only, backpacking sites. Many of the tent-only sites are in the Chisos and are truly backpack-only, located between about 1 and 6 miles from the trailhead; overnight backpackers should park in the large amphitheater lot adjacent to the Chisos Basin Campground. Activities you can reach from these sites include hiking and backpacking on the Chisos trails, wildlife and bird viewing, paddling and river trips in the park's waterways, fishing, and scenic auto- and backcountry-road touring spring (March April) is the busiest time for blooms and bird migration, with holiday spikes around Thanksgiving and New Year's, though the park is open year-round. These are primitive, designated backcountry sites meant for self-sufficient visitors: none provide water, electricity, toilets, or other amenities, and backcountry regulations are strictly enforced. Roadside primitive campsites require capable vehicles high-clearance SUVs or trucks with at least 15-inch tire rims and a minimum of 8 inches of ground clearance measured from the lowest vehicle point and 4-wheel drive is strongly encouraged; trailers and ordinary passenger cars will not reach most roadside sites. Before you go, check the park's backcountry use pages for permit, reservation and trip-planning details, and inspect the individual site listing for directions to that remote location. Big Bend is far from major towns and has no public transportation: bring ample gas, water, food and repair supplies (the park has four small camp stores with limited stock, while the nearest full grocery and hardware options are in towns like Alpine, Fort Stockton, or Del Rio).
