“Ranger Jean watching over the campground deserves accolades for being informative, kind, and thoughtful!”
“not much river for being wild and scenic ”
“Very nice campground near Santa Elena Canyon. Well kept, large level sites and decent bathrooms. We went in mid-April and the weather was nice - highs near 90 and lows near 70.”

Cottonwood Campground sits in the southwestern corner of Big Bend National Park at about 1,900 feet, where a stand of cottonwood trees along the Rio Grande shades a small, quiet cluster of sites and frames views toward Santa Elena Canyon. The campground feels remote it's positioned between the Castolon Historic District, the dramatic river-carved canyon, and the far end of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive and that isolation is part of the draw: dark night skies, intense desert sun in spring and summer (daytime highs typically top 100°F from mid-March through August), and noticeably cooler conditions in fall and winter when cold air settles into the lower elevations. Birdwatchers especially favor Cottonwood; the nearby river and riparian vegetation support a high diversity of species (including Mexican mallard, Lucifer hummingbird, Mexican jay and varied buntings), and short hiking routes radiate out from the campground for easy morning or evening birding and wildlife viewing. Other park activities accessible from this area include auto touring on the scenic drives, biking, paddling and fishing on the Rio Grande, and longer hikes into surrounding canyons. Practical facilities are straightforward and geared to low-impact camping: Cottonwood is dry camping with potable water, vault toilets, picnic tables, raised grills and bear boxes at each campsite there are 29 sites total, 28 of which accommodate both RVs and tents and one that is a tent-only, walk-in site (the tent-only site is the group campsite; no RVs or trailers are allowed there and vehicle parking is limited to an adjacent lot a short walk away). There are no electrical or sewer hookups, no dump station, and generators are not permitted. Individual sites are similar: dirt/gravel parking, table, grill and a bear box, with most offering good shade and some late-day sun. Reservations are restricted by a two-week window for individual sites (you can book no more than two weeks in advance), and fees and detailed reservation procedures are handled through the park's official system. Note also that access can be deceiving on GPS units do not take Old Maverick Road unless you have high clearance and four-wheel drive and expect a true backcountry feel here rather than developed campground conveniences.
