“We tent camped. Enjoyed sitting at camp looking at the stars. We hiked The window Trail. Very nice hike. Then off to Lost Mines trail. The most beautiful hike in Big Bend. We are planning to go back in March. ”
“Wonderful campground with some jaw dropping views but beware of the sticker burrs.”
“Everything was exceptional except for the loud children screaming in the area. I know that this cannot be helped, but it was rather loud.”

Chisos Basin Campground sits at about 5,400 feet in the bowl of the Chisos Mountains, ringed by steep limestone cliffs and a mix of montane shrubs and higher-elevation maples, pinyon and ponderosa pines. The campground contains 58 sites divided among three loops (Loop 1: 20 sites, Loop 2: 20 sites, Loop 3: 18 sites), and each site is fitted with a picnic table, charcoal grill and a bear-proof food storage box; a few sites also have picnic shelters for shade. Sites are generally small, rocky and not level, so the basin favors tent campers; although all 58 sites are technically both RV and tent sites, trailers over 19 feet and RVs over 24 feet are not recommended and will not be accommodated, and most RVs cannot be perfectly leveled without substantial leveling blocks. Water and vault or flush toilets are within easy walking distance of most sites, and a dump station is provided (note: the dump station sits on the right side of the road opposite most RV sewer outlets, so plan to bring extra-long hoses); there is no first-come, first-served camping sites are reservable year-round with some available six months in advance and others only two weeks out. The basin is the park's hiking hub: trailheads for the Lost Mine, Window, South Rim and Pinnacles trails (the latter accessing Emory Peak) are clustered in the main Chisos Basin area about a mile or so down the road from the campground, and the Chisos Basin Visitor Center, General Store and the Chisos Mountains Lodge (the park's only restaurant) are all nearby. River access for paddling and fishing is roughly 30 miles away, so expect to drive for canoeing or kayaking on the Rio Grande. Wildlife viewing and birding are outstanding here the Chisos Mountains host the only U.S. nesting grounds for the Colima warbler (roughly mid-April through mid-September) and attract hundreds of other species and nighttime skies are exceptionally dark for stargazing. Practical notes: the road into the basin is steep, winding and includes sharp hairpin turns; the group campground has no RV parking and generator use is restricted (generators are permitted only at specific reservable sites), so review site details carefully before you go, plan on bringing leveling gear and long sewer hoses if you're bringing an RV, and expect the campground to be busy nearly year-round. Activities you can pursue from here include auto touring, biking, camping, fishing, hiking, paddling and wildlife viewing.
