About

Rio Grande Village Campground sits alongside the Rio Grande in the eastern reaches of Big Bend, where cottonwoods shade a compact network of sites that look eastward toward the rust-colored Sierra del Carmen across the river. The campground contains 93 reservable sites that accommodate both tents and RVs, arranged in nine loops Loop 1 is the smallest with 5 sites and Loop 9 the largest with 13, while Loop 2 holds 22, Loop 3 seven, Loop 4 ten, Loop 5 eight, Loop 6 nine, Loop 7 eleven, and Loop 8 eight. Sites range from small tent spots to large pull-throughs that can fit a 40-foot motorhome, but low-hanging branches are common; tall or long rigs should check individual site descriptions before arrival. The campground includes at least one ADA-designated campsite, and a few sites are reserved for park administrative use, so planning ahead is advisable. Facilities concentrate on essentials for multi-day stays and river access rather than full-service hookups: each site has a picnic table, charcoal grill and a bear-proof food locker, and some sites include picnic shelters for additional shade. There are no electrical or water hookups, but water spigots, flush toilets and utility sinks are all within easy walking distance and a fill/dump station sits at the campground entrance; showers and laundry are available at the Rio Grande Village Store just outside the loop. Generators are allowed only during posted hours (8 a.m. 8 p.m.). All 93 campsites are reservable (some sites open for booking up to six months in advance while a subset are released only two weeks ahead), and there is no first-come, first-served option. Recreation radiates outward from the campground: the river put-in provides straightforward access for canoeing and kayaking, birders frequent the riverbanks for species seen chiefly in Big Bend, and nearby trails and backcountry roads lead to sights such as Boquillas Canyon and the Hot Springs. At about 1,850 feet elevation the site can be noticeably cooler in fall and winter as cold air settles in the valley, though spring and summer highs commonly exceed 100°F, so bring shade, water, and a plan for the heat.
