Salt Lick Creek Campground sits along Cordell Hull Lake on the Cumberland River system, roughly 10 miles from Gainesboro and reached from the Carthage area via the Smith Bend Road corridor off the state routes that serve the lake's eastern shore. The campground contains 144 campsites, each configured to serve both RVs and tent camping and all offering electric hookups; the loop also includes a large group shelter for gatherings. On-site facilities are complete enough for extended stays: flush toilets and hot showers, drinking water, laundry facilities, and a dump station. A boat ramp and visitor center are located within the camping area, and there's a playground for children, making the site practical for families and boat-centric weekends. The land around the lake is a mix of rolling hills and mature hardwoods maple, hickory, oak, beech and chestnut so campsites are threaded with shade in summer months that typically range from the 60s into the 90s. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency runs an intensive wildlife-management program at the lake under license to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and white-tailed deer, wild turkey, quail and a variety of waterfowl are commonly seen along the shorelines. Recreation at Salt Lick Creek is concentrated on the water and the wooded trail networks beyond it. Cordell Hull Lake itself covers about 12,000 acres, stretches 72 miles upstream and offers 381 miles of shoreline; anglers will find white bass, rockfish, largemouth bass, catfish, shad and crappie, while boaters and water-sports users commonly sail, water-ski and jet-ski on the broad coves. Trails in the area provide many miles for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding the 6-mile Bearwaller Gap Trail (trailhead at nearby Defeated Creek Park), the Turkey Creek Nature Trail and the Bear Wheels Trail are local options. The campground supports day-use pursuits such as picnicking, wildlife viewing and environmental education programming available through the visitor center; hunting is also a managed activity on the broader lake lands, so check seasons and permit rules before planning a hunt. Practical details such as current fees, reservation windows and seasonal openings change from year to year, so contact the Corps or the official campground reservation service before you go; private lodging and resort options are also available in the region if you need alternatives to camping.
