About

Defeated Creek Park Campground sits on the shore of Cordell Hull Lake, part of the Cumberland River system about seven miles from Carthage, Tennessee, and is set among rolling hills of maple, hickory, oak, beech and chestnut. The campground contains 152 sites in all: 149 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 3 tent-only sites, with two named loops Hone (38 sites) and Lake (99 sites) making up the bulk of the campground. Sites offer electric hookups, and the day-use area includes two large group shelters that have water and electric and are available on a first-come, first-served basis or by reservation. On-site recreation amenities that serve families and groups include a beach, playground, boat ramp and an adjacent marina, plus tennis and volleyball courts and picnic facilities; a marina and other contracted concessions are available nearby. For practical details like current fees, seasonal openings and how to reserve shelters or campsites, check the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers/Cordell Hull Lake pages before you arrive. The lake itself covers roughly 12,000 acres, stretches 72 miles upstream and provides some 381 miles of shoreline, so boating and water-sports dominate much of the activity here you'll find boat ramps, a marina, and plenty of room for sailing, water-skiing and jet skiing. Anglers come for white bass, striped bass (rockfish), largemouth bass, catfish, shad and crappie, while miles of trails in the surrounding hills support hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding; notably the 6-mile Bearwaller Gap Trail has a trailhead inside the campground, and the Turkey Creek Nature Trail and Bear Wheels Trail are nearby. Interpretive and wildlife opportunities are strong: the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, under license to the Corps, runs an active wildlife management program, and whitetail deer, wild turkey, quail, squirrels, rabbits and a wide range of waterfowl are commonly seen. The area also supports environmental education, a visitor center and other recreation services, and if you'd like a change of pace the historic town of Granville is about 25 miles away with annual heritage events each May.
