Horsethief Lake Campground sits about 10 miles south of Hill City and just a couple of miles from Mount Rushmore, with campsites tucked among tall ponderosa and lodgepole pine right beside Horsethief Lake. The campground contains 22 sites in all: 12 sites are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, and 10 are tent-only (including several walk-to tent-only spots for groups or backpack-style campers). Roads inside the campground are paved, and most sites include a picnic table and campfire ring; there are vault toilets and drinking water on site but no electrical hookups, so plan accordingly for power and winter heating needs. The setting is classic Black Hills pine forests, rocky outcrops and a clear lake edge making the campground a quiet base for both short stays and longer outings. Recreation options branch out from the lake and the surrounding national forest: Horsethief Lake itself supports fishing, swimming and boating, while hundreds of miles of forest roads and trails invite mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and off-highway vehicle trips. Hikers and bikers can reach the nearby George S. Mickelson Trail, a packed-gravel rail-trail that crosses the hills via tunnels and converted railroad bridges, and more ambitious walkers can tackle a day hike to Black Elk Peak and the old Harney Lookout Tower. Wildlife viewing is excellent here bighorn sheep, elk, deer, pronghorn and many raptor species are commonly sighted and big destinations such as Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument and nearby caves are all easy day trips. For facility-specific information, reservation questions or current conditions (including fees and seasonal availability), call the campground phone at (605) 574-4402; be aware that no refunds are given for weather-related events.
