Sheridan Lake Campground sits along the south shore of Sheridan Lake in the Black Hills National Forest, roughly 20 miles west of Rapid City near Three Forks. The campground is arranged in five large loops and offers 89 campsites in total 87 of which accommodate both tents and RVs, with two sites reserved for tent-only use so families and rigs of various sizes can find a spot within easy reach of the water. Many campsites have direct lake access and all provide basic comforts: picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets and drinking water. There are no electrical hookups, and a boat ramp on-site plus easy walking access to the South Beach Area make this a practical base for swimming, boating and lakeshore relaxation. From inside the campground you can also reach the south boat ramp and the Flume Trailhead without a long drive, which makes morning launches and trail days convenient. The wider Black Hills offer a layered outdoor program across seasons: Sheridan Lake supports rainbow and brown trout, northern pike and perch for anglers, with fly-fishing opportunities on Spring Creek below the dam and ice fishing in winter; trails nearby include the Dakota Point access to the Centennial Trail and the Calumet Trailhead for the Flume Trail, an 11-mile route (plus a 3-mile loop) that follows the historic Rockerville Flume and passes visible artifacts from the 19th-century waterworks. Summer and early autumn bring hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and off-highway vehicle use across the forest, while winterers can pursue snowshoeing, skiing and snowmobiling on groomed routes and ungroomed backcountry. Wildlife viewing is excellent look for bighorn sheep on rocky outcrops and eagles, hawks and a variety of songbirds near streams and the lake. Practical notes: check current fees, reservation availability and seasonal openings with facility staff at (605) 574-4402, and be aware that no refunds are given for weather or related events.
