Pactola Reservoir Campground sits among tall pines on the south shore of Pactola Reservoir in the Black Hills National Forest, about 17 miles west of Rapid City along SD-44 with a short turn toward US-385. The campground has 53 sites in total: 47 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 6 sites designated for RVs. Many sites offer water views, and all provide basic comforts for an outdoors stay picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets, and drinking water but there are no electrical hookups. The reservoir shoreline and a small sandy beach are within walking distance of the loops, and two boat ramps on site make it easy to launch a boat; a full-service marina nearby stocks basic supplies. Pactola Visitor Center, located on the south side of the dam, is open seasonally and offers conservation education and local information. For facility-specific questions, fee and reservation information, or seasonal details call (605) 574-4402; note that no refunds are given for weather or related events. The campground is a practical base for both water-based and forest recreation. Pactola Reservoir is the Black Hills' largest and deepest reservoir roughly 800 acres with 14 miles of shoreline and depths to about 150 feet and is managed by the Bureau of Reclamation. Anglers can expect rainbow, lake and brown trout, kokanee salmon, largemouth and rock bass, and yellow perch; record lake trout are taken here every year and large brown trout use Rapid Creek above and below the dam. From the campground you can hike the 2.2-mile Osprey Trail, which includes two loop trails and a spur to an overlook where ospreys are often seen, and swimming and boating are popular in season. Beyond the immediate shore, Black Hills National Forest offers mountain biking, OHV riding on moderate terrain, horseback riding and horse camping, interpretive programs, and opportunities to visit fire lookouts or overnight cabins. Wildlife viewing is rewarding year-round bighorn sheep, elk, deer and pronghorn roam the hills and raptors including bald eagles, osprey and peregrine falcons frequent the waterways. Day trips within easy reach include Jewel Cave, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument, Devils Tower, and Wind Cave National Park.
