Hawe Creek Campground sits on the shore of J. Strom Thurmond Lake just south of McCormick, South Carolina, with the road from US-378 ending at the campground a mile from the Dorn Sportfishing Facility the largest facility of its kind in the Southeast. The campground contains 33 sites in total: 32 that accommodate both RVs and tents and a single RV-only site. Most sites are located along the water and each provides either 30- or 50-amp electrical service, making them suitable for truck campers and full-hookup rigs that need higher amperage. You'll find the basic Corps of Engineers campground infrastructure on site a boat ramp, a dump station, showers, flush and vault toilets, and potable drinking water so launching a morning fishing trip or rinsing off after a day on the lake is convenient. Because the campground is operated by the Corps, current fees, reservation windows and any seasonal closures are set by them; check the Corps of Engineers website or contact the Thurmond Lake office for up-to-date reservation policies and rates. The setting is a heavily wooded mix of pine and hardwood that provides good summer shade and colorful foliage in the fall, and the lake environment shapes much of the activity here. Hawe Creek is a practical base for anglers chasing striped bass and largemouth, with Thurmond's 70,000 acres of water and extensive shoreline supporting excellent boating, water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing and swimming; the on-site ramp gets you onto the water quickly. Wildlife is abundant around the campsites southern bald eagles, migratory waterfowl, wild turkeys and whitetail deer are commonly seen and the broader Thurmond Lake recreation area adds opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, environmental programs, playgrounds and other concessions. If you want amenities off the lake, Savannah Lakes Village is a few minutes away for dining, shopping and lodging, and Hickory Knob State Park and area golf courses are within a short drive; for special events, the Augusta National hosts the Masters each April.
