Petersburg Campground sits on the wooded shore of J. Strom Thurmond Lake, about four miles upstream from the Thurmond Dam and Visitor Center and roughly 25 miles from Augusta, Georgia. The Corps of Engineers manages the site on a lake that covers 70,000 acres of water and more than 1,000 miles of shoreline, so water access feels immediate even when the sites are shaded by mixed pine and hardwoods. There are 90 total campsites, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents; the campground is arranged into three loops Loop A with 25 sites, Loop B with 27 sites and Loop C with 38 sites and most sites offer water and 50-amp electrical hookups. Onsite facilities include flush and vault toilets, hot showers, treated drinking water and a dump station, and the campground stays open year-round, with summer heat and humidity giving way to mild winters. The campground itself offers a small beach network, two swimming beaches, a playground, a boat ramp, a fishing dock, a pond, a short on-site trail and a first-come, first-served picnic shelter, making it easy to move between boating, swimming and shore fishing for largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, bream and catfish. Beyond the loops, Thurmond Lake supports a wide variety of recreation from extended hiking on the nearby 1.8-mile Lake Springs Loop and sections of the 27-mile Bartram Trail to horseback riding, biking, environmental education programs, concession services and seasonal hunting and wildlife viewing and you're likely to spot bald eagles, migratory waterfowl, wild turkey and white-tailed deer.
