“The Army Corp of Engineers, again, did an excellent job. Large lake without a lot of high speed boats, pull in camping, close to showers, nice staff, and plenty of privacy between sites. ”
“Our campsite was level and clean. Great access to the water, spacious, and the campground was well maintained.”

Ridge Road Campground sits on a wooded peninsula along J. Strom Thurmond Lake, where mixed pine and hardwoods give summer shade and show fall color along the shoreline. The campground offers 66 campsites, each able to accommodate both RVs and tents, and many of the sites provide water and 50-amp electrical service. Basic comfort facilities are on site: flush and vault toilets, hot showers, drinking water, laundry facilities and a dump station, plus a playground for kids. Practical day-use conveniences for anglers and boaters include a boat ramp, dock and a fish-cleaning station right at the campground; the combination of shoreline access and trees creates open water views from many sites without feeling exposed. Outdoor opportunities here take advantage of Thurmond Lake's 70,000 acres of water and extensive shoreline. Anglers come for largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, catfish and bream; boaters and watersports enthusiasts will find room for waterskiing, jet skiing, canoeing and swimming. A few miles from Ridge Road are hiking options ranging from the short 1.8-mile Lake Springs Loop to long sections of the 27-mile Bartram Trail that follow the lake; the broader Thurmond Lake area also supports hunting and wildlife observation, and visitors commonly see bald eagles, migratory waterfowl, wild turkeys and whitetail deer. Ridge Road is accessed from I-20 via the Appling/Exit 183 corridor and a short drive on GA-221/GA-47; because fees, reservation windows and seasonal availability can change, check the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers site or the local visitor center before you go.
