Winfield Campground sits on the Little River arm of J. Strom Thurmond Lake, part of a much larger 70,000-acre reservoir with more than 1,200 miles of shoreline. The campground's 79 waterfront sites all accommodate both tents and RVs and offer electrical hookups, set among a mixed pine and hardwood forest that delivers summer shade and colorful leaves in the fall. Summers here are hot and humid while winters tend to be mild, and wildlife viewing is a regular part of the stay expect to see bald eagles and migratory waterfowl along the shore, along with wild turkeys and whitetail deer in the woods. Access is straightforward from I-20; the campground lies a short drive north of Exit 175 on Highway 150 and is adjacent to Mistletoe State Park, so it's easy to combine a Winfield campsite with the state park's trails and nature center. Facilities at Winfield are practical and camper-focused: flush and vault toilets, hot showers, drinking water and a dump station, plus a playground and a boat ramp that give immediate access to the lake. On Thurmond Lake anglers fish for largemouth bass, striped bass, bream, crappie and catfish, and the wide waterway supports boating, water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing and swimming; the Corps of Engineers also manages a large wildlife program and hunting areas around the lake. Because fees, reservation policies and seasonal site availability can change, contact the Army Corps of Engineers office that manages Thurmond Lake for current rules and booking options before you go; nearby towns supply groceries, dining and cultural attractions, and the Augusta area including the Masters at Augusta National in April is within driving distance for day trips.
